Starting an Online Business

It does not whether you are just starting an online business, or you have been working on your online business for many years.  Every few months there are new changes and challenges to overcome.  Even though I have been working online since 1996, and making my living online full time since 2005, I am still occasionally surprised by what is out there.

When I first started out you just had to know how to use one of the basic website design programs, Front Page or Dreamweaver, and how to write basic code.  That was pretty much it.  Building a website sometimes took longer than writing the content.  Now there is blog software and web hosting companies that provide 5 minute installation and you are up and running.  You do not need to know FTP or even how your webhost is configured.  Now we can focus on building our businesses and writing content, which these days is far more critical than it was even 12 months ago.  Content drives your business, it gets you the leads and prospects that you need to grow and prosper.

It is your content that is how you are found.  If the search engines like what you have written and you have placed your keywords properly, have the right depth of content and you have filled out your meta tags correctly, then you might get listed on one of the top pages for your chosen keyword.  This is a marathon, not a sprint.  If you back a few years, it was a lot easier to push a page high up in the search engines.  Keyword stuffing of the meta tags, the image tags, content, headers would get you a temporary top 10 spot until the competition figured out copied you and dropped you down a few pages, then you had to do it all again.

The content rich websites that were focused on a single topic have never had to worry about playing these games.  We have always built websites that have a large number of pages of relevant content and there are always several pages that get ranked highly in the search engines at any one time.  We have never had to resort to tricks to get listed, we just spend our time writing more content.  Now that blogs sites like WordPress have replaced regular websites, adding content has become even easier.

Focus is the key to success.  Focus on one set of ways of building and growing your business, focus on one reputable company or one affiliate program.  By having a narrow focus, you are able to detect changes happening to your business and you are able to react more quickly.  I have been with the same company since 1996 and I have been through many changes and challenges over the years, but I have been able to adapt to every one of those challenges because I was able to see them coming and come up with an alternate plan.

What I want to share with you is how to adapt and deal with the changes that you will be dealing with.
